From the Shadows was a show started in mid 2005 by a group of hackers who also appeared to have a background in television rooting from TechTV. The premise was generally short single-topic episodes. Though this seems like it could be boring and short, From the Shadows was anything but. The scope of a single episodes was large enough to hold interest of the hardcore, as well as the newcomer. Assembled with professional-grade editing and film effects, From the Shadows became one of the first iptv shows to not only offer independent content, but use connections to show things that would be considered unthinkable for more simpler shows of the time. Content stopped being produced in 2006 after six episodes.

Box 1.0 – Mobile Gaming

From the streets of Los Angeles to the skies above, From The Shadows is taking “mobile gaming” to new heights. In the early days of video gaming, handheld devices served as a major evolution in gaming technology, allowing gamers to break free of the confines of the couch. Since the initial emergence of the first generation of handhelds, mobile gaming devices have improved but still remain fundamentally unchanged, waiting for another step forward in the evolution of gaming. With the recent release of such devices as the Sony PSP and Nintendo DS, handheld devices have truly evolved into “mobile” devices. Equipped with high speed communications technology, this new generation of mobile devices is set to redefine many aspects of gaming as we know them. In “From The Shadows: Box 1.0″ the capabilities of the Sony PSP and Nintendo DS are pushed to new limits. Come join the FTS crew as we bring mobile gaming to you, from the shadows.

Box 2.0 – Saberology

George Lucas? Star Wars saga is one of the most popular and widely known epics of all time, a veritable postmodern Gilgamesh. The Star Wars films and the ideology espoused therein have had a cultural and societal impact on the world, inspiring countless individuals and arguably the most ardent fan base this side of Fenway. In anticipation of the release of Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, the From the Shadows team took a trip to the world famous Mann?s Chinese Theatre, where we joined a long line of fans, some camping in front of the theatre for weeks. There, FTS met up with Aaron Mosney, a self-proclaimed ?Master Sabsersmith? and sole proprietor of www.saberology.com. Following in the long tradition of the Jedis before him, Aaron has crafted what he calls ?the perfect dueling weapon,? utilizing forms including Kendo, Kenjitsu, Chinese Broadsword and European Fencing to create?handcrafted light sabers. In Box 2.0, From the Shadows gives a glimpse into the life of a real-life ?Master Jedi.?

Box 3.0 – 0wning 2.4Ghz

Breakthroughs in wireless technologies over the past five years have catalyzed a revolution that reaches far beyond the reach of the average consumer, although they almost certainly have felt their impact. The 2.4 GHz spectrum is used as the basis for such technologies as Wireless Networking (commonly referred to as ?Wi-Fi), and even wireless security cameras. These innovations can be attributed to the fact that the 2.4 GHz spectrum is unlicensed and inexpensive to manufacture, making it a perfect solution for consumer devices. What most manufacturers fail to realize, however, is that consumers are far more than a statistic or a predictable demographic. A small subsection of pioneering consumers are actively modifying and evolving standard technologies into creations far outstripping the vision and application of their original creators. These consumers range from hobbyists to hardcore hackers, each with a different idea for modifying and utilizing the 2.4 GHz spectrum. In Box 3.0, From the Shadows takes an inside look at the vulnerabilities of the 2.4 GHz spectrum with a complete vulnerability assessment by means of ?War Driving? and ?War Viewing,? startling methods never before captured on film. PC Magazine columnist and consumer electronics expert Robert Heron lightens up the mood a bit by heading to the world-famous Venice Beach boardwalk to help people with their HDTV and HD-DVD questions. Next, Tech TV personality Josh ?Yoshi? Dehererra demonstrates how to ?void your warranty? and extend the range of wireless capabilities of the Sony PSP. Finally, From the Shadows is joined by Humphrey Cheung, editor of the popular website ?Tom?s Hardware,? to demonstrate how to crack a WEP key in five minutes or less, enabling you to access information on an encrypted access point?not that you?d ever do such a thing, of course.

Box 4.0 – Red Light. Green Light

As the sprawl of urban metropolis continues to expand into the depths of the suburbs and beyond, the length people must travel to and from work continues to expand as well. Everyday, millions of people spend countless hours on roads and freeways, caught in the ever-increasing congestion. In Box 4.0, From the Shadows takes a look at who controls the traffic, going Italian Job style into the bowels of the LA County ATSAC (Automated Traffic Surveillance and Control) Center and testing the system?s vulnerabilities and the widespread implications of a security breach. Next, Yoshi shows users a cheap, easy, do-it-yourself method to fix scratches on PSP and iPod screens. We also meet back up with Robert Heron, who shows us how to ?eternalize? your collection of video games by centrally archiving them onto your PC hard drive, negating the need for CD-ROMs or other software. After leaving, we explore the possibility of externally altering the L.A. traffic system, meeting a special guest to determine if the average citizen can, indeed, control the flow of traffic.

Box 5.0 – Beer !!!

Science. Art. Technology. Beer represents more than just a consumable liquid; it also represents one of the world?s oldest and most popular beverages. Today?s beer requires advanced technological sophistication and a team of engineers and scientists with the singular goal of creating the perfect brew. From the Shadows travels to San Francisco, where we are given a personalized tour of the Anchor Steam brewery from founder and brew master Fritz Maytag, exploring the advanced science of beer, from creation to consumption. Inspired by the visit, From the Shadows returns to Los Angeles and visits the Culver City Brewing Supply Company to learn the requisite supplies necessary to create a great beer. Supplies in hand, we head south to San Diego, where Evan Freiberg, former brew master?s assistant of the Ballast Point Microbrewery, helps us to create our first batch of home brew. Finally, From the Shadows introduces viewers to the cutting edge of brewing technology, a device called the ?Keg-Bot,? a beer dispensing computer that provides each user an electronic tag to monitor consumption and, based on pre-programmed variables such as body weight and time, will automatically determine one?s Blood Alcohol Level, an innovation that?s working not only to help change the way beer is distributed, but to promote responsible consumption of beer as well!

Box 6.0 – DeFCoN

In Box 6.0, From the Shadows travels to Las Vegas to the world-famous DEFCON convention, the world?s largest annual gathering of hackers and security experts. Since its inception in 1993, DEFCON has transformed into a Mecca for top hackers, ?crackers?, security professionals and ?feds? . We talk with some of the world?s most notorious hackers, and sit down with Robert Morris, the former chief of the National Security Administration, to give us a comprehensive overview of this one-of-a-kind convention. While at DEFCON, Flexilis attempts to test the limits of long-distance RFID (radio frequency identification), a bar code replacement being widely adopted by supply chain manufacturers in both the public and private sectors. Despite widespread claims that these security enabled devices could function at only a short range, Flexilis was able to detect RFID signals from a distance of almost 70 feet, establishing the world record and calling the security of such devices into question. From The Shadows also take an in-depth look at more traditional security breaches by examining the art and science of lock picking, and meet up with the Shmoo Group, an international collective of computer security experts and developers of the ?Wi-Fi Blood Hound? devoted to exposing the deficiencies in wireless security technologies.
