In its investigative documentary, Hackers, the fifth estate explores the inherent tension between the convenience and speed with which people conduct their personal, social and corporate affairs via the internet, and the high price in personal security exacted by the technology they use.

Synopsis

The internet is a global web of interconnected computers which make it possible for people and companies to complete transactions at the speed of light. But it is the very interconnectedness of the web that leaves virtually every machine attached to it vulnerable to unwanted intrusions.

A large and unruly subculture of computer hackers has developed and made freely available a wide assortment of tools for penetrating the flimsy security built into commercial software for computers.

Now people connected to the web are vulnerable to bewildering and largely unpredictable risks, ranging from mischief to accidents to crime --- just by logging on.

Efforts at policing the internet are at an early and largely ineffective stage. For the foreseeable future, the security of the web will depend on the morality of the people who use it. The best we can hope for is managed confusion. The worst we might fear is chaos.
